THE BENEFITS OF FASTING
Print Print   Email to Friend Email to Friend

Every year in the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, Muslim believers all over the world start fasting from dawn to dusk daily throughout the month. The spiritual benefits of fasting may not be scientifically documented but they are numerous. It prompts us to prayer, which is communion and fellowship with our creator. That communication opens us to hear His calling on our lives, or the answers we may be seeking in a questionable situation are much clearer.

"Fasting promotes detoxification"

Aside from the spiritual values of fasting, there are physical rewards that come to you by our not eating for a short time. These rewards are reaped not only by the over plump person, but by anyone who fasts.

Fasting initiates rapid weight loss with little or no hunger. Most people are surprised at how little desire for food they have while fasting.
Fasting promotes detoxification. As the body breaks down its fat reserves, it mobilizes and eliminates stored toxins.
Fasting gives the digestive system a much-needed rest. After fasting, both digestion and elimination are invigorated.
Fasting quiets allergic reactions, including asthma and hay fever.
Fasting promotes the drying up of abnormal fluid accumulations, such as edema in the ankles and legs and swelling in the abdomen.
Fasting corrects high blood pressure without drugs. Fasting will normalize blood pressure in the vast majority of cases; the blood pressure will remain low after the fast, if the person follows a health-supporting diet and lifestyle.
Fasting makes it easy to overcome bad habits and addictions. Many people have overcome tobacco and alcohol addictions by fasting, and even drug addictions. Fasting rapidly dissipates the craving for nicotine, alcohol, caffeine and other drugs.
Fasting clears the skin and whitens the eyes. It is common to see skin eruptions clear while fasting, and the whites of the eyes never look so clear and bright as they do fasting.
Fasting restores taste appreciation for wholesome natural food. People say that their taste buds come alive after fasting and that food never tasted so good.
Fasting is good for mental discipline. It sharpens your mind and makes you alert and sensitive to mental effort. You concentrate more readily if your stomach is empty and not drawing blood from the brain to digest food.
Fasting is the perfect gateway to a healthful diet and lifestyle. Fasting gives you the motivation and enthusiasm to make a fresh start.

It seems that there are many reasons to consider fasting as a benefit to one's health. The body rids itself of the toxins that have built up in our fat stores throughout the years. The body heals itself, repairs all the damaged organs during a fast. And on the spiritual side, it makes your character stronger by the self-discipline and humble experience of denying yourself food. The double benefit is your feeling of well being, with a clearer eye, sharper brain, springier step, and greater efficiency for your work. It has often been said: "The man eager for success has the lean, hungry look." A bit of starvation can give you that eagerness in a hurry.
