Quoted from www.rmp.gov.my, in year 2007 the total number of road accidents was 363,319 of which 5,672 cases involved death. In moments of anticipation to reach the final destination, people often neglect their responsibilities on the road or are unaware of precautionary measures to ensure the condition of their vehicle before embarking on their trip.

"Staying up the night before a long trip is not advisable"

Road-accident rates are found to be at high during the holiday season. Hence, taking extra precautions are ever so crucial to avoid contributing to the rising statistics.

Vehicle Safety Check
Follow these safety checks on your vehicle at least a day or two before embarking on any long-distance travelling.
Engine oil level should be at a sufficient level and ensure that there are no leaks.
Check coolant level and conditions, radiator hose for leaks and condition of radiator pressure cap and position.
Check the condition and tension of all safety belts. Worn-out belts should be replaced.
Check that brake and clutch is working.
Check tyre pressure and condition of tyres. Keeping your tires properly inflated is crucial for the proper performance and longevity of the tyre. Check for any cuts, punctures, or any other damages that could cause the tyre to come out of service prematurely.
Check the electrolyte levels of your battery, including the terminals clamp and cable.
Check your windscreen washer level, wiper blade condition and wiper operation.
Check that your brake lights, hazard lights, headlights and horn are functioning.

Driving While Drowsy Is Dangerous
Thousands of travellers in Malaysia are killed or seriously injured every year because drivers are drowsy or fall asleep at the wheel. It's a shame that the numbers shown is unnecessarily high as most cases are avoidable.

The driver needn't be worn out for disaster to strike; just one momentary lapse of concentration can lead to tragic results.

Prevention is better than cure; once sleepiness sets in, there is little you can do but to take a good rest. Here are some precautionary measures for drowsiness:

How To Prevent Drowsiness Before Your Trip
Time management is everything; it pays to spend time planning for your trips.
Staying up the night before a long trip is not advisable; start a long trip in the morning after a good night's sleep.
Avoid driving during late nights and early mornings; plan to drive at times when you are normally awake.
Plan for rest breaks; it is not wise to drive through out the night.
Avoid alcohol and medication that may cause drowsiness before and during the trip. Check with your doctor if you're not sure.

Look Out For Signs Of Drowsiness
Sore or heavy eyes
Day dreaming
Delayed reactions
Stiffness or cramps
General tiredness
Poor gear changes
Increased or decreased speed
Droning and humming in ears

On Your Trip
Take regular breaks (at least every hour).
Take turns to drive if possible.
Practice a healthy diet as it affects your alertness level.
Utilize rest areas, parks, gardens and tourists spots on all major highways for quality rests.
